While he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” 28 He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” In this brief Gospel, a woman praises Jesus by praising His mother. Jesus responds by explaining the deeper reason for true blessedness: those who hear the word of God and live according to it are blessed. Mary herself is the clearest example of this response, because she received God’s word in faith and remained obedient to it throughout her life. For Catholics, this Gospel is proclaimed on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Mary’s faithful response to God’s word helps explain why this passage is especially appropriate for the feast.
