In the course of his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, 39 seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” 41 He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. 44 For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.
Jesus contrasted the behavior of some of the scribes, the legal interpreters of OT Law, with the faith, generosity, and sacrifice of the poor widow. The scribes were the ancient Jewish equivalent of lawyers and would serve as trustees to widows’ estates. They wore long prayer shawls (talliths) with tassels on the corners to remind them to observe the commandments (Num. 15:38-40). Some of them were pretentious and vain, and loved puffing up themselves in public pretending to be pious. They took advantage of widows for their own profit. Jesus warned that the behavior of such scribes should not be imitated. They will be condemned at the last judgment.
Jesus sat opposite the Treasury building which was within the temple area. The temple treasures as well as the liturgical vessels and vestments were kept in the Treasury. Many wealthy people gave alms to the Treasury out of their excess, but the poor widow gave out of her want. The widow’s true faith and complete reliance on God were in direct contrast to the conduct of some of the scribes. She contributed all the money she had in support of the Temple. She gave everything to God or in alms. She made a real sacrifice which was the true treasure. She was truly pious and fulfilled the great commandment of love (Mk. 12:33).
Almighty God, grant us the sincerity of faith to give of our time, talent, and treasure out of love for you. This we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen!
